...all
pregnant women quit smoking?
A study of SIDS deaths
showed that more than 700 out of 3000 were related to maternal smoking.
700 deaths that appear to be preventable.
We know that there are
also links between smoking and miscarriage, stillbirth, oral/facial
clefts, and premature birth. The Surgeon General's Report for 2004
makes it very clear: "Babies whose mothers smoke before and
after birth are three to four times more likely to die from SIDS."

SIDS
Mid-Atlantic is offering smoking cessation training for
clinicians,
healthcare providers, and lay professionals. We can come to your
site to present a brief counseling technique to encourage pregnant
women to stop smoking,
and stay quit, as
a part of SIDS risk reduction.
The
technique is “The 5 A's” and has been approved by ACOG, AAP,
AWHONN,
and others as a best practice.
Upcoming
Training in The 5 A's by SIDSMA.
In 2006,
SIDSMA received funding from the Virginia Chapter of the March of
Dimes to train providers in the Resource Mothers Program for the
Commonwealth of Virginia. Trainings were provided in several locations
around the state, enabling providers to intervene with pregnant
teenage smokers to reduce the risk of birth defects, low birthweight,
prematurity, and SIDS.
